92% of Luxembourg residents reveal personal data online

A large majority of Luxembourg residents are revealing too much personal information online, a study from the National Statistics Institute (Statec) on confidentiality and data protection announced on Wednesday.

Names, dates of birth and identity card numbers are the most frequently published data.

The Statec report indicated that, in total, about 92% of internet users revealed personal data on the web in 2016.

The dissemination of photographs, information on health status, income, employment or even location are less frequent. Even so, four out of ten users published this type of data on the internet last year, according to the study.

Only four in 10 internet users say they have read the confidentiality policies before sharing information, which comes of no surprise as so many of these policies are exceptionally long. So just be vigilant and think twice about revealing important information if you don’t have to.
