John Kerry’s Luxembourg visit: Kerry, Asselborn and Schleck go cycling

All three have something in common – they are avid cycling enthusiasts, so it seemed fitting after a busy working day that US Secretary of State John Kerry and Jean Asselborn took a little cycling tour with Andy Schleck, Luxembourg’s former Tour de France winner.

The three cyclist passed almost incognito, as they rode along the country roads of Luxembourg, around the area of Mersch.

Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn knows these routes well and can often be seen enjoying them on his bike, and also around Steinfort, where he lives.

Andy Schleck on the other hand hails from Mondorf-les-Bains in the south of the country but probably knows Luxembourg’s roads better than most on a bike. Now retired, he won the Tour de France in 2010 and participated in the Tour de Luxembourg on countless occasions.

John Kerry is a big cycling fan and despite turning 73 in December, does not hesitate in taking a moment to cycle in his free time while on diplomatic visits. He even takes his own bike with him.

Curiously though, the US Secretary of State donned a jersey on Saturday with the colours of Brittany. This could well be a link to his mother’s family. His mother Rosemary Forbes Kerry, grew up in France where she met her future husband. The family still own a house in Brittany.
