Petition for Luxembourgish language takes off

Petition 698, which calls for Luxembourgish to be considered the first official language and national language for all citizens in Luxembourg, has already received over 7,000 signatures.

It took Petition 698 less than four days to pass the threshold of 4,500 signatures: under Luxembourg law, petitions which receive that number of signatures or more are discussed in Parliament.

The petition calls for the language to be taught and further strengthened in schools. Furthermore, it would require that all administrative documents, government communication and court decisions be written in Luxembourgish.

A public debate will be organised and broadcast by Chamber TV; the meeting will not be open to the public.

Lucien Welter, who started the petition, wants to “save the Luxembourgish language before it disappears”.
