Could Luxembourg send an astronaut into space?
Over 22,000 people applied for the six full-time astronaut roles in the European Space Agency’s latest recruitment drive, including 65 from Luxembourg.
In this podcast, local candidate Federico Giusto, an aeronautical engineer working for Ispace Europe, talks about why he applied and the strides Luxembourg is making in the new space sector.
ESA talent acquisition chief Lucy van der Tas, meanwhile, explains what the panel will be looking for, the gruelling training that awaits successful candidates and the ground-breaking parastronaut feasibility project.
“It’s the first time a space agency has opened up the possibility for people with a disability to apply,” she says, adding: “The selected candidate to work with ESA to see what’s needed to adapt vehicles, equipment and spacesuits to people with a disability […] We thought by opening the door and taking the first small step we can prepare the ground for much bigger steps in the future.”
