Government Steps into Final Phase of Campaign for Equality in Local Politics

The third phase of a campaign to increase female representation at the political level launches this week with a series of messages from the Ministry of Equal Opportunities, including testimonies from citizens and people in the public eye each addressing why they think a good gender balance is essential in politics.

The campaign will be rolled out across media in Luxembourg through to October this year.

Women account for just 13 mayors out of 105 in Luxembourg, and 45 of the 231 aldermen. Just under a quarter of councillors are women.

The campaign hopes not only to changes attitudes towards women in politics, but also to encourage women to run for political office. Coaching and mentoring support will be offered to women who put themselves forward.

It is being accompanied by a series of information meetings and open doors sessions in municipalities across the country.
