How about a republic of Luxembourg?
A petition calling for a referendum about whether or not to keep Luxembourg’s Grand Ducal family went live this week.
The author of Petition 703 calls for a referendum to consult citizens about the future of Luxembourg’s State during the constitutional review underway.
He requests that the public be asked if they wish to retain the Grand Ducal family, which is “designated by heredity and where citizens have no say in the appointment of a head of state”.
Alternatively, he asks if they would prefer to have a republic, with a president directly elected by the people.
“The constitutional revision underway should allow Luxembourg citizens to decide on this fundamental issue of our Constitution and to confer new legitimacy to the head of state,” the petitioner wrote.
At the time of publishing, it had garnered over 700 electronic signatures.
