Unemployment falls to 5.85% in Luxembourg

The unemployment rate in Luxembourg has decreased to 5.8% over the past year.

The number of jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 15,813 as of 31 October 2017, representing a decrease of 1,006 people or 6.0% over one year- the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate calculated by STATEC is 5.85%.

This decline is particularly beneficial for jobseekers under the age of 30 (-10.5%) and low-skilled job seekers (-10%). The number of long-term unemployed people also decreased by 8.8%.

On the other hand, the number of jobseekers who attended post-secondary education rose by 2.9%. The number of beneficiaries of a measure for employment remained more or less stable over one year. Nevertheless, following the legislative changes that took place in August 2017, there were significant variations in professional internships (+63 beneficiaries over one year) and paid temporary jobs (-85 beneficiaries over one year).

In addition, the number of jobseekers in training increased sharply (+142 people over one year), following the launch of new training courses, particularly in the catering and cleaning sectors.

During the month of October 2017, employers reported 2,930 vacancies to ADEM, which is 12.3% more than in October 2016.
