The new head of Luxembourg conservative party the CSV in the capital is setting his sights on becoming Luxembourg City’s next mayor.

Serge Wilmes, 34, was Monday elected to oversee the party in the capital winning 72% of votes, after standing against Maurice Bauer.

Wilmes is adamant the party will pursue its goal of taking seats in Luxembourg City’s Council, currently a DP enclave.

“During the last 11 years, the CSV has been in opposition in the capital. It is time for a political change. The majority of blue-greens [DP-Greens] are losing momentum and we want to show that policies which better serve families and better coordinate the capital are possible,” Wilmes said.

Wilmes will be top of the candidate list for the CSV in the communal elections to be held in October 2017. If elected, he said he would not pursue a ministerial position if one was offered him after the legislative elections in 2018.

“You cannot dance at two weddings at once. When one joins the Board of Aldermen in the capital, it is for a term of six years,” he said, alluding to former City mayor Xavier Bettel, who left the role to become Prime Minister in 2013.
