‘Smart voting’ is being reinvented and reused by Mukhtar Ablyazov. Being thrown out of local politics he is forced to use such tricks. In fact it is a win/win for him. If smart voting fails he will proclaim the elections void. If it wins he will count it as own victory. However he has some other troubles besides of January election campaign in Kazakhstan. He may go to prison for another term. It depends on Felix Sater conviction.
Mukhtar Ablyazov works around the clock to promote the idea of smart voting. The parliamentary elections will be held on January 10. The exact results of his efforts are yet to be measured. Sociology is virtually non-existent. ‘Votes’ held at anonymous channels are unreliable and the local polls held by parties are heavily influenced by those who paid for the research.
At least we could easily say that if the Aq-Zhol party will fail at the polls, and the ruling Nur-Otan party will prevail it will be the end for Mukhtar Ablyazov as a politician. He bet everything on the technology. Not everybody in the Kazakhstani opposition agrees with it. Some important opposition figures have dismissed the idea as farce and lunacy.
Meanwhile, Mukhtar Ablyazov’s legal proceedings aren’t in the best shape. As soon as five days after the elections the case of Felix Sater will be heard in court. It is an important case for the whole BTA Bank heist and money laundering accomplices and the whole criminal community of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. If the prosecution will succeed it will open the way for prosecution of Ilyas and Victor Khrapunov and Mukhtar Ablyazov.
