No Smoking season

Number of smokers in Luxembourg declines. Whilst the figures from the Cancer Foundation in Luxembourg show a general decline in smoking in the Grand Duchy, there is a rise in smoking among the 18 to 24 year olds.

The percentage of smokers was 20% of the population in 2016 down 5% from the 2007. 23% of men and 18% of women are smokers. Whilst daily smokers accounted for 15% of the population in 2016, this went down 6% compared to 2007.

The largest decrease in smokers came from the 25-34 year olds who have dropped 4% in just one year taking them to 25%, which is “the best result ever recorded in this age bracket” says the Cancer Foundation.

Among the 15-24 year olds, one in five smokes a shisha. Whilst 4,000 people smoke with an electronic cigarette which equates to less than 1% of the population.

Every year, 1,000 people die from the consequences of tobacco consumption in Luxembourg and more than 80 from passive smoking.
