The Driest winter in Luxembourg since 1947

The 2016/2017 winter was the driest winter recorded at the Luxembourg-Findel weather station since 1947. That is up until Wednesday, with rainy winter weather returning in recent days and one week to go until the meteorological end of winter.

The figures released by STATEC show that the accumulated precipitation for the winter period 2016/2017 so far has been 62.2l/m2, being 72% below the long-term average 1981-2010 (226l/m2).

Temperatures were, to date, slightly below the long-term average of 1981-2010. The winter of 2016/2017 was sunny with 202.7 hours of sunshine, about 28 hours more than in the reference period 1981-2010. The month of January 2017 was the 4th-sunniest January since 1947.

The winter 2016/2017 in Luxembourg was thus slightly too cool, sunny and extremely dry.

Up until now, the driest winter ever observed at the MeteoLux station was the winter of 1963/1964 with a cumulative rainfall of 69.0l/m² for the whole winter.
